What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a complimentary therapy applying pressure through massage using the thumbs and fingers to certain reflex points on the feet, hands or face. It is extremely effective and is based on the principle that reflexes in the feet, hands and face correspond to each body part, organ, gland and structure in the body, and are linked to those organs by energy channels, zones or meridians.
It is thought when illness occurs in the body, the corresponding energy channels become congested, and Reflexology is applied to help decongest these channels, allowing the energy to flow freely again, so restoring the body's natural balance and therefore good health.
Reflexology began in the ancient Chinese and Japanese healing arts of acupressure and massage. These skills were later researched and developed by Dr. William Fitzgerald an American ear, nose and throat specialist.
Dr William Fitzgerald, used zone therapy (as he called it) on his patients and produced outstanding results. He discovered that by applying pressure on one part of the body it could have an anaesthetising effect within another unrelated area of the body.
Dr Fitzgerald found by placing pegs on certain areas of his patient's fingers, that pain could be relieved in their ears, nose, eyes, sinuses or jaw. Dr Fitzgerald then went on to develop a theory which divided the body into ten vertical zones ending in the fingers and toes. He found that pressure on one part of a zone could affect anything else within that zone.
